About Mykonos Island
Mykonos is a premier Greek island destination located in the heart of the Aegean Sea within the Cyclades archipelago, positioned about one hundred fifty kilometers east of Athens. As a major cruise port, it ranks as the second most popular island stop in the Cyclades after Santorini. A row of historic windmills, mostly constructed by Venetians starting in the sixteenth century to grind local wheat, stands proudly on a ridge overlooking the water. Nearby, Little Venice forms one of the most romantic neighborhoods in the Aegean, where colorful wooden balconies hang directly over the crashing waves. Another architectural marvel is the Church of Panagia Paraportiani, an asymmetrical, entirely whitewashed structure built organically over centuries by combining four lower chapels with a fifth one sitting on top.
Beyond its scenic beauty, Mykonos evolved into an international jet-set hotspot beginning in the nineteen-sixties, eventually expanding into a celebrated global destination renowned for upscale nightlife and vibrant summer energy. For history enthusiasts, the nearby tiny island of Delos, accessible via a short ferry ride, offers one of the most significant archaeological and mythological excavation sites in all of Greece, preserving ancient ruins closely tied to classical antiquity.
