Explorer of the Seas is a Voyager class cruise ship operated by Royal Caribbean International that entered service in 2000. Carrying just over 3,000 guests, she sits in the mid sized category and helped introduce a new style of cruising with larger public spaces and a wider choice of activities than many ships of her era. When she launched, she briefly held the title of the world's largest passenger ship before newer vessels in the class took that distinction.
One of the ship's most unusual features was a dedicated atmospheric and oceanographic laboratory operated by the University of Miami's Rosenstiel School of Marine, Atmospheric, and Earth Science. Scientists collected valuable data during voyages until the research programme ended in 2007, giving the ship a unique place in cruise history.
Life on board center's around a wide variety of activities. A signature ice skating rink remains a highlight, while the rock climbing wall continues to be popular with active guests. Later updates added the FlowRider surf simulator, replacing the original inline skating track, and the 2023 refurbishment introduced The Perfect Storm, featuring the Cyclone and Typhoon racing waterslides. The pool deck includes four swimming pools and several whirlpools.
Dining ranges from the main dining room and Windjammer Café buffet to the 24 hour Café Promenade for lighter meals and snacks. Specialty restaurants add Japanese hibachi, Italian cuisine and a classic steakhouse, giving guests plenty of choice throughout their cruise.
Accommodation ranges from inside cabins to spacious suites, with balcony cabins among the most popular and a Royal Suite, that includes a large private terrace with its own Jacuzzi.
Explorer of the Seas suits a wide range of travelers, particularly families and multi generational groups looking for plenty to do on board. Her combination of well established attractions, regular updates and varied dining and accommodation continues to make her a popular ship in the Royal Caribbean fleet.
