This rich, layered history shapes the magnificent architecture seen throughout the city today.
Massive medieval ramparts encircle the entire Old Town, and walking along the stone battlements offers breathtaking views over terracotta rooftops and the azure Adriatic. The Stradun, a wide limestone-paved boulevard, serves as the main pedestrian artery connecting the western and eastern gates. Along its length stand architectural treasures such as the Rector's Palace, Onofrio's Fountain, and the thirteenth-century Franciscan Monastery featuring a serene cloister.
Local gastronomy highlights traditional Dalmatian and Adriatic flavors. Fresh fish, shellfish, and grilled seafood feature prominently on menus alongside regional specialties like pašticada, a slow-cooked marinated beef dish served with gnocchi, and black squid ink risotto. Dining establishments cluster densely throughout the winding limestone lanes and along the historic harborside.
