Balmoral is a classic cruise ship owned and operated by Fred. Olsen Cruise Lines and currently serves as the largest vessel in their fleet. Originally built in 1988 by the Meyer Werft shipyard in Papenburg, West Germany, as Crown Odyssey for Royal Cruise Line, she previously sailed for Norwegian Cruise Line as Norwegian Crown and Orient Lines. In 2007, she underwent a major lengthening project at the Blohm + Voss shipyard in Hamburg, which added a 30-meter midsection to expand guest spaces while preserving her traditional maritime proportions. Renamed after the Royal Family's Scottish estate in 2008, she carries roughly 1,300 guests, placing her firmly in the mid-sized category with an intimate, restful, and distinctly unhurried atmosphere on board.

The ship's interior layout centers around welcoming social spaces, panoramic ocean views, and attentive service. Guests can choose from five distinct dining venues, ranging from casual self-service options in the Thistle Restaurant to elegant main dining rooms and specialty venues featuring Asian, grill, and traditional Italian menus. Her public areas feature seven bars and lounges, a dedicated theater in the Neptune Lounge for evening shows, and two heated saltwater swimming pools positioned on the Marquee and Lounge decks, surrounded by open deck space and plenty of sun loungers.

Her small-ship navigation capabilities serve as her primary defining strength, allowing her to reach hidden harbors, narrow rivers, and scenic waterways that modern mega-ships simply cannot access. Balmoral can navigate narrow channels like Norway's Åkrafjord to drop anchor near the spectacular cascading Langfoss Waterfall, sail up France's winding Seine River past charming countryside directly into Rouen in Normandy, and transit Germany's Kiel Canal by lowering her mast to pass beneath low bridges.

Accommodations range from comfortable single staterooms tailored for solo travelers to spacious oceanview cabins and suites, many appointed with classic British styling.

Balmoral suits seasoned travelers, couples, and cruisers looking for a traditional ocean voyage marked by scenic sailing, relaxed surroundings, and destination-focused itineraries. Add your cruise aboard Balmoral to your profile on The Cruise Globe.
