Viking Sky is a cruise ship launched in 2016 and operated by Viking Ocean Cruises since 2017. She carries around 930 passengers, making her a mid-sized ship built for intimacy rather than scale. Fincantieri built her in Ancona, Italy, and though originally planned to sail in 2016 as Viking Sea, delivery was delayed until 2017, when she was christened that June in Tromsø.
The ship takes her name from one of the first four vessels of Royal Viking Line, a company Viking founder Torstein Hagen led as CEO from 1980 to 1985. Like her sister ships, Viking Sky offers an intimate, boutique hotel-style atmosphere, with signature Scandinavian-themed decor, luxury fabrics, spacious lounges with elegant leather furnishings, gourmet cuisine, and a curated art collection. She sails as an adults-only ship, with a minimum age of 16 and no dedicated children's facilities or programs.
All 465 passenger cabins are outside cabins with balconies, each featuring a king-size bed with a deluxe mattress, an en-suite bathroom with heated floors, premium toiletries and a smart television with on-demand entertainment. Dining venues include The Restaurant as the main dining room, buffet options, the Aquavit Terrace for outdoor dining, and specialty venues such as an Italian grill and a Chef's Table.
Complimentary Wi-Fi, included shore excursions, and complimentary wine and beer at lunch and dinner all come standard. Onboard amenities run to two pools, a spa, a fitness centre, several lounges and bars, a sports deck, a theatre and various shops. Every Viking Ocean ship features a Snow Grotto, a spa retreat where powdery snow falls from the ceiling, while the two-deck Explorer's Lounge offers a large forward-facing observation area, a feature rarely found on modern cruise ships. Unusually for the industry, Viking Ocean vessels carry no casino.
The ship's hull is strengthened for ice navigation to Finnish-Swedish ice class 1C, allowing her to reach colder climates, and her design reflects Viking's small ship travel concept, blending the excursion inclusive style of river cruising with an affordable luxury ocean product. Viking Sky appeals to discerning travellers seeking a refined, approachable way to cruise, with the focus on destinations and onboard elegance rather than spectacle.
