Belfast is the capital and largest city of Northern Ireland, set on the banks of the river Lagan and connected to the open sea through Belfast Lough and the North Channel. The port is located on Lagan River, which empties in the Irish Sea. It serves mainly as a port of call rather than a turnaround base, drawing cruise passengers to explore a city with a rich and complicated past.

Belfast has a long maritime heritage. Though chartered as an English settlement in 1613, it grew as a major commercial and industrial centre and retains a port with commercial and industrial docks. Since the Good Friday Agreement, the city has been relatively peaceful and major redevelopment has occurred, especially in the inner city and dock areas. The port handles over 100,000 passengers per year.

The most famous draw for many visitors is maritime history itself. The city houses the biggest Titanic museum in the world, Titanic Belfast, a maritime heritage monument built at the site of the shipyard Harland & Wolff. Belfast Castle sits 400 feet above sea level on the slopes of Cave Hill Country Park, providing vantage points over the city and water, and is believed to have been built by the Normans.

The city's character is complex. Peace walls are reminders of Northern Ireland's complicated political history, originally erected to quell conflict and now used as a repository for art and messages, with the most prominent found between The Falls Road and Shankill Road in west Belfast. CS Lewis Square is a public space dedicated to the Chronicles of Narnia creator C.S. Lewis, featuring seven bronze sculptures from The Lion, the Witch and the Wardrobe.

Belfast has an oceanic climate with cold winters and mild summers, with average summer highs of 19°C and winter lows of 4°C. The city centre is within easy reach of the cruise terminal by shuttle and taxi, and the food scene is full of Irish twists, from the Ulster fry and traditional Irish potato pancakes called boxty to local delicacies.
