Roatán is the largest of Honduras' Bay Islands, lying about 65 kilometres off the country's northern Caribbean coast. It is one of the Caribbean's most popular cruise destinations and is visited mainly as a port of call. Surrounded by the clear waters of the Mesoamerican Barrier Reef, the second largest barrier reef system in the world, the island is especially well known for its outstanding snorkelling, diving and marine life.

Cruise ships call at two separate terminals on the island. Isla Tropicale is used primarily by Carnival Corporation cruise lines, while Port of Roatán, also known as Port Coxen Hole, welcomes ships from several other major cruise lines. Both terminals offer easy access to beaches, island tours and local attractions. Coxen Hole, the island's largest town, takes its name from the seventeenth century buccaneer Captain John Coxon and reflects Roatán's colourful maritime history.

Roatán has a fascinating cultural heritage shaped by Indigenous peoples, European settlers and Caribbean influences. English is widely spoken across the island, alongside Spanish, a legacy of its long association with British settlers and privateers. The Garifuna community, whose heritage blends African and Indigenous Caribbean traditions, continues to play an important role in the island's culture, particularly in Punta Gorda, the oldest permanent post Columbian settlement on Roatán.

The island's greatest attraction is its natural beauty. Coral reefs fringe much of the coastline, creating exceptional conditions for snorkelling and scuba diving among colourful tropical fish and sea turtles. West Bay Beach is one of the island's most popular stretches of sand, offering calm turquoise waters and direct access to the reef. Visitors can also explore tropical gardens, meet rescued sloths and monkeys, enjoy zip line adventures through the forest canopy or simply relax on one of the island's many beaches.

Fresh seafood features prominently in the local cuisine, with conch soup among the best known regional dishes. Baleadas, a traditional Honduran flatbread filled with ingredients such as beans, cheese and avocado, are another local favourite. Roatán is an excellent destination for beach lovers, families, wildlife enthusiasts and anyone looking to enjoy a relaxed Caribbean island with beautiful scenery both above and below the water.
