About Sydney NS
Sydney sits on the eastern coast of Cape Breton Island in northeastern Nova Scotia, linked to the rest of the province by a convenient causeway. The sheltered South Arm of Sydney Harbour provides year-round, ice-free, deep-water anchorage for large vessels, welcoming cruise ships primarily during late summer and fall voyages through Canada and New England.
Founded in 1785 by the British and incorporated as a city in 1904, the community was named after British statesman Thomas Townshend, First Viscount Sydney. It served as Cape Breton Island's colonial capital until 1820, when the region was officially annexed to Nova Scotia.
The early twentieth century brought rapid expansion when Sydney became home to one of North America's premier steel mills. While that industrial legacy runs deep, today the city focuses warmly on welcoming travelers.
Stepping off the ship at the recently upgraded waterfront pavilion, visitors are greeted by the world's largest fiddle standing right beside the terminal.
