Queen Mary 2 is the flagship of Cunard and entered service in 2004 after being christened by Queen Elizabeth II. Carrying around 2,600 guests, she falls into the large ship category and holds a unique place in modern passenger shipping as the only purpose built ocean liner still in regular service. Designed by British naval architect Stephen Payne and built in France by Chantiers de l'Atlantique, she continues the traditions of the great transatlantic liners while offering the comfort expected by today's travellers.
Life on board combines classic elegance with a relaxed atmosphere. Guests can choose from a wide selection of restaurants and bars, from the two deck Britannia Restaurant to the Golden Lion, a traditional British style pub serving favourites such as fish and chips, pies and curries. Evenings bring theatre productions, live music, dancing in the ballroom or a quiet drink while watching the sea.
There is plenty to enjoy during sea days. The ship features several swimming pools, a fitness centre, a casino, an art gallery and one of the largest libraries at sea, with thousands of books available to borrow. Queen Mary 2 also became the first ship to feature a planetarium, which remains one of her signature attractions.
Accommodation ranges from comfortable inside and oceanview cabins to spacious suites and duplex apartments. Solo travellers are well catered for with dedicated single staterooms featuring ocean views, while the interiors reflect a modern interpretation of Art Deco style. The wide teak promenade deck is ideal for a leisurely walk and has become one of the ship's defining features.
Several details celebrate Queen Mary 2's maritime heritage. She carries a traditional red postbox where guests can send letters with a special onboard postmark, and one of her whistles originally served aboard the first Queen Mary. She is also the only passenger ship to offer dedicated kennels for cats and dogs, complete with an exercise area and playful touches inspired by Britain and New York.
Queen Mary 2 suits travellers who appreciate classic ocean travel, elegant surroundings and the traditions of one of the world's most famous passenger ships.
