About Port Mahon
Mahón, the capital of Menorca, sits on the island's eastern coast in Spain's Balearic Islands. Its harbour is the defining feature, stretching for around 5 kilometres and reaching up to 900 metres across. One of the world's longest natural harbours, it provides deep, sheltered water for visiting cruise ships. Mahón is primarily a port of call, with larger ships using the quayside while smaller vessels may anchor offshore.
The harbour has attracted seafarers for thousands of years, including the Romans and, much later, the British. British forces controlled Menorca for more than 70 years and moved the island's capital to Mahón because of the harbour's strategic importance. At its entrance, the Mola peninsula is dominated by a large fortress that was developed under British rule and later strengthened by the Spanish. British influence can still be seen in parts of the city's architecture and in its long association with local gin production.
The city has a compact historic centre filled with 18th-century mansions, churches and narrow pedestrian streets. The Gothic Church of Santa Maria is one of the main landmarks, while Plaza de la Esplanada provides a spacious centre for local life. Cafés and restaurants around the waterfront make it easy to pause and watch boats moving through the harbour.
Mahón has given its name to two familiar products. Mahón cheese is a traditional Menorcan cheese, while the city is closely associated with the origins of mayonnaise, which is often linked to the French capture of the city in the 18th century. Local restaurants provide opportunities to try both alongside Menorcan dishes and seafood.
There are no beaches in Mahón itself, but Menorca's coastline is easily reached from the port. Pine-covered landscapes and sandy coves surround the island, including the shallow waters of Es Grau. Menorca is also a UNESCO Biosphere Reserve, with ancient taulas, distinctive stone monuments, found at archaeological sites around the island.
With its sheltered harbour, British and Spanish heritage, local food and easy access to Menorca's countryside, Mahón gives cruise passengers a good introduction to the island without needing to travel far from the waterfront.
