Explora I

Explora I is the first of six ships in the MSC EXPLORA-class, delivered in 2023. She is operated by Explora Journeys, the luxury cruise division of Mediterranean Shipping Company founded in 2021. She carries around 1,473 guests across 461 staterooms spread over 13 decks, placing her firmly in the mid-sized category. All Explora Journeys ships were built by Fincantieri, the Italian shipbuilder.

Explora I was conceived as an all-suite ship with a distinctly European approach to luxury. Cabins range from 35 square metres in the Ocean Terrace category to 280 square metres for the Owner's Residence. The ship was designed in partnership with world-renowned superyacht and hospitality designers, blending Swiss precision with modern European craftsmanship. The interiors emphasise space and connection with the sea, a departure from the more enclosed, land-hotel feel of some large cruise ships.

The ship is built with expedition travel in mind. Itineraries are designed for expedition-style travel, and in her first year, Explora I visited 132 ports across 40 countries, including rare ports like Saint Pierre in Martinique and Kastellorizo Island in Greece. All Explora Journeys vessels feature the latest environmental and marine technologies to reduce emissions.

Families are actively catered for. The ship includes a dedicated children's lounge (the Nautilus Club) with age-appropriate supervised activities for children aged 6 to 17, including gaming, sports contests, and workshops. One child under 18 sails free on family suites, while children aged 2 to 17 receive 50 per cent off.

Explora I's first cruise departed from Copenhagen on 1 August 2023. The ship suits discerning travellers seeking a smaller, all-suite vessel designed for exploring less-travelled ports, whether voyaging with family or as a couple.
