About Ibiza
Ibiza sits on the southeastern coast of the island of Ibiza in the Balearic Islands autonomous community, off the eastern coast of Spain. Cruise ships dock at Ibiza Town, a port that typically serves as a port of call rather than a turnaround port. The town is usually a day stop on Mediterranean itineraries.
Ibiza Town divides into two parts: the old town, located on a fortified hilltop called Dalt Vila, and the more modern lower quarter. The first inhabitants were Phoenicians, with settlement claimed to have been founded in 654 BC. UNESCO declared the city a World Heritage Site on 4 December 1999. Walking through the steep cobblestone streets of Dalt Vila rewards you with views of Renaissance fortifications and the cathedral of Santa Maria d'Eivissa at the top.
Beyond the historic quarter, Ibiza offers far more than its nightlife reputation suggests. The island's landscape features limestone hills and lush pine forests, with white-colored houses so abundant they earned it the nickname the "White Island". Artistic roots were settled in the early '60s when artisans, painters, and designers flocked to the island. The bohemian atmosphere can still be experienced at Las Dalias, where stalls sell handmade clothes and tapas within the shade of pine trees. Quieter pursuits include visits to nearby beaches, art galleries tucked into the lower town, and cafes serving local Mediterranean food.
Dalt Vila holds a medieval fortress and castle, and the Cathedral features simple Gothic beauty. Mercat des Port, the oldest artisan market on the island, opens daily from April until October and sells jewellery, leather goods, arts and crafts, and local artisanal products. For a day on the water, ferries run to the neighbouring island of Formentera, an hour's journey away with unspoilt sandy beaches.
The climate is warm and Mediterranean. Restaurants close for a siesta in the morning, then reopen in the afternoon, so timing matters. The town sits close enough to the docks that you can walk from your ship to shops, restaurants and the beginning of the old town streets within minutes.
