Costa Smeralda is a large Excellence-class cruise ship operated by Italian line Costa Cruises. Constructed by Meyer Turku in Finland, she was delivered in December 2019 and officially christened by actress Penélope Cruz in February 2020. Hosting approximately 5,200 guests at double occupancy, she stands alongside her sister ship, Costa Toscana, as a flagship of modern design. Notably, she is the second cruise ship in the world engineered to run fully on liquefied natural gas, positioning her among the cleanest-burning vessels at sea.
The ship's interior architecture celebrates authentic Italian design traditions, with staterooms designed by Dordoni Architetti. Deck themes take inspiration from famous Italian cities, utilizing high-end furnishings from iconic Italian brands such as Molteni & C, Dorelan, Roda, Flos, Dedar, Rubelli, Kartell, Poltrona Frau, and Alessi. A unique centerpiece on board is the 400-square-meter Costa Design Museum, curated by Italian designer Matteo Vercelloni as the fleet's first onboard design exhibit.
Dining and lounge spaces emphasize regional Italian flavors and specialty concepts. Main dining rooms present complimentary Destination Dishes inspired by the vessel's upcoming port of call, while the specialty Archipelago Restaurant serves five-course regional menus curated by renowned chefs Bruno Barbieri, Hélène Darroze, and Ángel León. Dedicated beverage spots include the Ferrari Spumante Spazio Bollicine, an Aperol Spritz Bar, Campari Bar, and a Nutella Café.
Recreation and wellness facilities cover expansive outdoor and indoor areas. Active guests can visit Deck 16 to experience a full water park, water slides, a ropes course, rock climbing wall, and mini-golf course. Main pool areas feature a retractable glass roof, an adults-only Beach Club, and an outdoor theater with a giant LED screen. For relaxation, the onboard spa complex offers 16 treatment rooms, a Thalassotherapy Pool, a Hammam Room, a Salt Room, a Relaxation Room, and a Snow Room.
Accommodations span interior, oceanview, and balcony staterooms alongside luxury suites, all styled to reflect contemporary Italian elegance.
With its stylish architecture, refined atmosphere, expansive dining lineup, and balanced deck spaces, Costa Smeralda stands out as a prime choice for cruisers of all backgrounds. Log your completed or upcoming voyage on Costa Smeralda in your account on The Cruise Globe.
