About Boston
Boston's cruise port, Flynn Cruiseport Boston, sits in the Seaport District and is run by Massport, which oversees most of the Port of Boston. The port operates mainly from March to November, with its busiest season in early fall when Canada and New England cruises both depart from and call at Boston. There are two cruise terminals, Terminal 1 Warehouse and Black Falcon Cruise Terminal, both at the same location.
Boston itself has deep ties to American history. Since first described by Europeans in 1614, Boston Harbor has been an important port, recognised as one of the finest natural harbors in the world due to its depth and natural protection from the Atlantic by the many islands that dot the harbor. On December 16, 1773, Boston Harbor was the site of the Boston Tea Party, an iconic development in the American Revolution. The Port of Boston was historically important for the city's growth and was originally located in what is now the downtown area, called Long Wharf.
The city's waterfront has changed dramatically. The Seaport is a formerly industrial area that has undergone extensive redevelopment, beginning with the completion of the Big Dig in the early 2000s, a $14.6 billion project that buried the formerly elevated Central Artery highway which had previously cut off the waterfront from the rest of the city. As of 2017, the Seaport has 78 restaurants, 8 hotels, and continues to grow.
From the cruise terminal, downtown Boston and its main attractions lie a short walk or shuttle ride away. The city is packed with historic sites tied to the American Revolution and the nation's founding. The port sits about 3 km (2 miles) from Faneuil Hall and the Freedom Trail, a 4 km (2.5 mile) pathway passing by 16 historic locations. The city's food culture centers on fresh seafood: lobster rolls, clam chowder and locally caught oysters are part of the Boston dining experience.
Boston is known for changeable weather, with bright sunny days that can turn blustery, and bathing suit conditions that can quickly become sweater weather as the sun sets and temperatures drop. Whether visiting in summer for coastal activities or in late September and October for the fall foliage, a mix of practical layers is wise.
