Radiance of the Seas is the lead ship of Royal Caribbean International's Radiance class. She entered service in 2001 and carries around 2,140 guests, placing her in the mid sized category. Built in Germany, she was delivered to Royal Caribbean in March 2001 and was the largest cruise ship constructed in the country at the time.
Glass is one of the ship's defining features. Radiance of the Seas has more than three acres of glass throughout her public spaces, including exterior viewing elevators and large windows in the dining areas. The effect is noticeable around the ship, bringing plenty of daylight into the interiors and giving guests frequent views of the sea. More than 700 balcony staterooms add to that connection with the outdoors, while a retractable glass roof covers one of the pool areas.
Dining and entertainment offer plenty of variety for a ship of her size. The two level Cascades dining room uses large mirrors, columns and extensive windows to create a bright setting for meals. Elsewhere, guests can choose from around ten dining venues, while the ship's atrium hosts Centrum WOW events that turn the multi level space into a stage for aerial performances. A rock climbing wall, mini golf course, swimming pools and water slide provide more active options during the day.
One unusual feature is found in the games area. Radiance of the Seas was the first cruise ship to feature pool tables fitted with computer controlled gyroscopes that compensate for the ship's movement, keeping the playing surface level while at sea. The ship also displays works by more than 100 artists from around the world, adding another interesting detail to the public spaces.
Accommodation ranges from inside cabins and oceanview rooms to balcony staterooms and suites. There are 1,061 staterooms across 32 categories, giving couples, families and solo travellers a range of choices. The largest accommodation is the Royal Suite, which also has a private terrace.
Radiance of the Seas suits families, couples and cruise newcomers who prefer a mid sized ship with plenty of natural light and a good balance of dining, entertainment and outdoor activities. Her glass filled design keeps the sea and scenery close throughout the ship, while the range of venues gives guests plenty of ways to spend their time.
