Voyager of the Seas is the lead ship of Royal Caribbean International’s Voyager class. Launched in November 1998 and formally named in November 1999 by Olympic figure skater Katarina Witt, with a capacity for around 3,400 passengers, she falls into the mid sized category. When she entered service, Voyager of the Seas was the largest cruise liner in the world and attracted attention for features that were new to the industry.
Several of those features became closely associated with the ship. Voyager of the Seas introduced the first rock climbing wall and first ice skating rink at sea, while the Royal Promenade created a large interior space designed like a street, with restaurants and other amenities. Some interior cabins overlook the promenade, giving them a view into the heart of the ship rather than out to sea. The ice skating rink can also serve as a TV studio and concert venue, while an in line skating track adds another active option.
Dining ranges from casual meals to specialty restaurants. Sapphire Restaurant is the main dining room, while Windjammer Cafe offers buffet dining, including an egg station at breakfast and a carving station at lunch. Giovanni’s Table provides an Italian themed specialty dining option with a multi course meal for an additional fee.
Entertainment has a strong presence onboard. The La Scala Theater takes its inspiration from the famous La Scala in Milan, with a velvet stage curtain and Murano glass chandelier providing an elaborate setting for Broadway style production shows. Ice skating shows make use of the rink and are another distinctive part of the entertainment programme.
Voyager of the Seas received a $97 million refit in September 2019 as part of Royal Caribbean’s Royal Amplified programme. The work added 72 passenger cabins, water slides and other improvements. The waterslides include twin racing slides, while activities also include rock climbing wall competitions and poolside live band entertainment during the day.
