About Kralendijk Bonaire
Kralendijk is the capital and main port of the island of Bonaire in the Caribbean Netherlands. The port sits on the west coast of the island, and ships dock directly in the town centre with no need for tenders. Cruise ships berth alongside in the city center, making it easy to step ashore into Kralendijk's compact, walkable streets.
The climate is hot and dry year round, with a short rainy season between October and January. The weather stays warm and reliably sunny, which is one reason Bonaire draws cruisers seeking open-water adventure.
More than anything, Bonaire means the underwater world. The island is a popular snorkeling and scuba diving destination because of its multiple shore diving sites and easy access to fringing reefs. The waters surrounding Bonaire and Klein Bonaire are protected as the Bonaire National Marine Park. Off the coast lies the uninhabited island of Klein Bonaire, noted for diving and snorkeling, reachable by water taxi or by local dive operators. You will not need to venture far to find pristine coral and schools of tropical fish.
On land, Kralendijk itself reflects its Dutch heritage in colourful colonial buildings and the town's layered history. Fort Orange is the oldest masonry structure on the island, originally built in 1639 as a fort by the Dutch West India Company. In 1816 it was rebuilt and named Fort Orange, and its current lighthouse was built in 1932. Walking the waterfront you will pass galleries, restaurants, and open-air markets selling local crafts and fresh produce.
Bonaire is one of the ABC islands, 80 km (50 mi) off the coast of Venezuela. The islands have an arid climate and lie outside the main development region for tropical cyclones. The island's interior holds Washington Slagbaai National Park, which covers a fifth of the island and is home to birds, lizards and donkeys. Though Kralendijk is compact, a taxi or rental car lets you explore the wider island. The language spoken is Papiamentu, though Dutch and English are widely used.
