About La Romana
La Romana rests on the southeastern coast of the Dominican Republic, located approximately 50 miles (80 km) east of the capital city, Santo Domingo. Cruise ships dock at a pair of riverfront berths along the Romana River, which were inaugurated in 2002 to accommodate the growing Caribbean cruise industry. Originally built in the 1950s by the Central Romana Corporation as an industrial shipping hub for the nation's largest sugar mill, the port has since transformed into a welcoming entry point for international travelers.
While the immediate dock facilities serve functional purposes, cruise lines regularly coordinate shuttle bus service to transport passengers to nearby resort destinations in about 15 minutes. Off the shore, the tranquil fishing village of Bayahibe serves as the launching point for boat tours to Saona Island, famous for its protected mangrove forests and sea turtle sanctuaries, as well as Catalina Island, a renowned destination for snorkeling and scuba diving.
