MS Roald Amundsen is a mid-sized hybrid-powered expedition cruise ship operated by HX Expeditions. Built by Kleven Yards in Norway, she embarked on her maiden voyage on July 3, 2019, carrying up to 530 guests alongside a crew of 150, which includes a dedicated professional Expedition Team. Constructed with a Polar Class 6 rating for Arctic and Antarctic conditions, she and her sister ship, MS Fridtjof Nansen, introduced hybrid technology to the fleet. Notably, she became the first hybrid vessel to navigate the Northwest Passage and was christened in late 2019 in Antarctica using a chunk of sea ice instead of a traditional champagne bottle.
Engineered specifically for remote polar exploration, the ship features sleek Scandinavian interiors and multi-deck observation platforms. Outdoor amenities include an expansive sun deck complete with an infinity pool, whirlpool jacuzzis, and poolside bar service. Interior public spaces are decorated with Arctic artwork, historic polar photographs, and wildlife imagery. The heart of the ship's educational experience is the Amundsen Science Center, complemented by custom expedition gear such as Blueye underwater drones, kayaks, and heavy-duty Explorer Zodiac boats for shore landings. Wellness amenities span an indoor complex, saunas, and a fully equipped fitness center.
Culinary choices across the ship include three distinct dining venues. Primary meals are served in the main Aune Dining Room, while casual international bites are offered at Fredheim Bistro. Specialty fine dining is available at Lindstrom Specialty Restaurant, featuring high-end Scandinavian menus.
Accommodations encompass 265 staterooms spread across 13 categories, with every room featuring an exterior view and half offering private step-out verandas. Living spaces are divided into three core categories: Polar Outside oceanview rooms, Arctic Superior balcony staterooms, and high-end Expedition Suites.
MS Roald Amundsen suits travelers who want genuine expedition cruising with serious ice capability and a focus on exploration over the biggest ships or longest onboard entertainment schedules.
