About Tracy Arm Fjord
Tracy Arm is a dramatic glacial fjord located in Southeast Alaska, positioned approximately 45 miles south of Juneau and 70 miles north of Petersburg. Named in honor of former Secretary of the Navy Benjamin F. Tracy, the fjord sits at the heart of the Tracy Arm-Fords Terror Wilderness, a protected area designated by the United States Congress in 1990. Rather than functioning as a standard port stop with shore excursions, Tracy Arm is experienced as a scenic cruising destination, allowing passengers to view towering granite cliffs, cascading waterfalls, and active ice fields directly from the ship.
The landscape stretches over 30 miles long, with roughly one-fifth of the wilderness area covered in thick ice. During the summer months, the fjord fills with vast quantities of floating ice, ranging from small chunks to massive icebergs the size of three-story buildings. At the deep end of the fjord lie the twin North Sawyer and South Sawyer Glaciers. Navigating the full length of the fjord depends heavily on dynamic seasonal ice conditions. When dense ice packs prevent large cruise ships from reaching the face of the glaciers, smaller expedition vessels and floatplane tours operating out of Juneau and Petersburg often provide alternative, close-range viewing opportunities through Stephens Passage and Holkham Bay.
Wildlife observation is a major highlight of the passage. The surrounding coastal habitat supports healthy populations of black and brown bears, timber wolves, Sitka black-tailed deer, and harbor seals that raise their pups on floating ice sheets. Birdwatchers routinely spot species like Arctic terns and pigeon guillemots along the rock faces, while mountain goats are frequently spotted navigating the steep cliffs near the base of the Sawyer Glaciers.
