MS Spitsbergen is operated by HX Expeditions, formerly Hurtigruten Expeditions, and has an unusual history. She was originally built in 2009 as MV Atlantida and ran as a car ferry until 2014, before undergoing a significant rebuild. Following a major drydock refit and reconstruction, she entered service in 2016 as an expedition cruise ship designed for polar regions. Carrying around 335 passengers, she is one of HX Expeditions' most intimate vessels for exploring remote areas.
The ship takes her name from Spitsbergen, the largest island in Norway's Svalbard Archipelago, where Hurtigruten founder Richard With began Arctic explorer tourism back in 1896. MS Spitsbergen was christened on July 8, 2016, in the Lofoten fishing village of Svolvaer, with Norwegian explorer Cecilie Skog serving as godmother.
Onboard, she feels more like a base camp for discovery than a floating resort. The interior carries Hurtigruten's signature Nordic design, with plenty of wood and leather throughout. The Spitsbergen Science Centre comes equipped with microscopes, touch screens, and modern digital technology, along with lecture halls and workshop spaces covering biology, marine life, geography, and photography. The Explorer Lounge and Bar hosts daily multimedia presentations and expert lectures from scientists and wildlife specialists.
Dining reflects the character of the region, with menus built around seasonal, fresh, and local ingredients. A newer specialty venue, Lindstrom, serves traditional Norwegian cuisine alongside a dedicated bar lounge, while the main dining room keeps things relaxed and informal, with generous buffets and waiter served evening meals.
Cabins range from compact inside berths to larger suites with balconies. Arctic Superior cabins have picture windows with twin beds and a sofa bed, while Polar Outside cabins feature porthole windows instead. Across her 8 decks, 6 of which are passenger accessible, guests will find 2 jacuzzis, a spa and sauna, and a fitness centre.
Every voyage travels with an expert expedition team, who deliver onboard lectures and join guests ashore for landings and guided hikes. As a dedicated polar expedition ship, Spitsbergen runs a full excursion program and exclusive Norwegian fjord itineraries, built for travellers who want genuine access to the Arctic rather than a passing view of it.
