Puntarenas is a vibrant city on the Pacific coast of Costa Rica, with a name that translates to "Sand Point" in English. It serves as the primary gateway to Costa Rica's Pacific coastline, where cruise ships typically dock at Puerto Caldera, the nation's largest seaport and most important cargo hub. Puerto Caldera and Puntarenas sit as separate ports located about 20 to 30 km (12 to 17 mi) apart.
The Spanish discovered the area in the early 1600s, and by the 1840s coffee became the city's biggest export. Puntarenas once reigned as Costa Rica's premier port before shifting shipping routes altered its trade economy. A new port was constructed in the 1980s at Caldera, reviving a historic anchorage used by ships during colonial times.
The destination enjoys a warm tropical climate year-round, featuring lush rainforests and temperatures in the 80s and 90s Fahrenheit. The laid-back seaside town borders a gentle stretch of sand kissed by Pacific breezes, highlighted by the mile-long Paseo de los Turistas boardwalk lined with restaurants, cafes, and colorful souvenir stands.
Surrounding the urban center are magnificent mountains, rainforests, and some of Central America's best beaches. National parks draw adventurers for river rafting, zip lining, horseback riding, and guided ecological walks. The nearby Tárcoles River teems with wildlife, offering boat tours to spot basking crocodiles, swinging monkeys, and vibrant tropical birds like macaws and herons. Visitors can also take boat tours to Isla San Lucas National Park, a former penal island transformed into a protected wildlife refuge and national park.
As a historic fishing hub, Puntarenas offers exceptional local seafood. Onshore attractions also include the active Puntarenas Cathedral, built in 1902 using stone, mortar, and brick.
