Serenade of the Seas is a Radiance class cruise ship operated by Royal Caribbean International. Completed in 2003, she carries around 2,490 guests, placing her in the mid sized category. Built at Meyer Werft in Papenburg, Germany, she was christened in New York City on 22 August 2003, with actress Whoopi Goldberg serving as her godmother.
Glass is one of the defining features of Serenade of the Seas. The Radiance class ships were designed with more than three acres of glass, including exterior viewing elevators and large windows in the dining rooms. The result is a ship where sea views are part of everyday life. Guests can watch the scenery from restaurants, lounges, the pool areas and even while moving between decks in the glass elevators. It is particularly appealing on scenic cruises, when there is plenty to see beyond the railings.
One unusual feature is the ship's self levelling billiard tables, designed to remain level as the ship moves. Accommodation ranges from inside and ocean view rooms to balcony staterooms and suites.
Dining offers a choice of familiar favourites and speciality restaurants. Izumi brings Far Eastern flavours, while Giovanni's Italian Kitchen focuses on Italian dishes. The Chef's Table provides a more intimate setting, with a five course meal paired with wines. There are also casual options, a main dining room and poolside choices, along with both an outdoor pool and a pool beneath a retractable glass roof.
There is plenty to keep active guests occupied. The 40 foot rock climbing wall gives a view over the ship, while the mini golf course provides another outdoor option. Basketball, volleyball, pickleball and table tennis are among the activities available, and the ship also stages Broadway style shows and offers a range of evening entertainment. The adults only Solarium provides a quieter place to relax, with large windows keeping the views in focus.
