About Wurzburg
Würzburg is a Main River cruise port in Bavaria's Lower Franconia region, with the city spread along the banks of the river. It is usually a port of call, giving cruise passengers time to explore a historic city known for its Baroque architecture, wine culture and compact old town. Much of the centre is easy to explore on foot, with major sights, restaurants and wine taverns within a relatively small area.
The Würzburg Residence is the city's standout sight and a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Built in the 18th century for the Prince Bishops of Würzburg, the palace is an elaborate example of Baroque and Rococo architecture. Inside, the Grand Staircase is one of the highlights, with its vast ceiling fresco by the Venetian painter Giovanni Battista Tiepolo. The palace's rooms and gardens give visitors a sense of the wealth and artistic ambition of the former prince bishops.
It's historic center was heavily damaged during an air raid in 1945, when much of the city was destroyed. Many important buildings were subsequently reconstructed or restored, helping to recreate the character of the old town. Today, Baroque and Rococo facades, churches and historic squares sit alongside newer buildings, reflecting the city's difficult history and its long rebuilding process.
One of Germany's important wine regions and lies in the heart of Franconia. Local vineyards are particularly associated with Silvaner and Riesling, often sold in the distinctive flattened Bocksbeutel bottle. Wine is part of everyday life in the city, and the Old Main Bridge is a popular place to enjoy a glass while looking towards the river and surrounding hills. The tradition of having a glass of wine on the bridge is known as Brückenschoppen.
Würzburg also has a strong cultural side. The Museum im Kulturspeicher occupies a former grain storage building beside the Main and combines modern and contemporary art with other collections. The Mainfranken Theater provides a programme of opera, dance and drama, adding to the city's appeal for visitors interested in the arts.
