About Bamberg
Bamberg is a river cruise port in Upper Franconia, Bavaria, where the Regnitz meets the Main. With a population of around 80,000, it has a compact historic centre that is easy to explore on foot after coming ashore. River ships call here as a port of call, usually as part of cruises along the Rhine and Main.
The Old Town is the main attraction. Around 2,400 timber framed houses contribute to a historic centre that has been a UNESCO World Heritage Site since 1993. Bamberg escaped much of the destruction suffered by other German cities during the Second World War, leaving an unusually complete medieval townscape. Cobblestone streets lead between half timbered buildings, church spires and small squares, making a walk through the centre one of the highlights of a visit.
Bamberg's history stretches back centuries. The town enjoyed a period of great prosperity from the 12th century and was briefly an important centre of the Holy Roman Empire. Emperor Henry II and his wife Kunigunde are both buried in Bamberg. The 13th century Bamberg Cathedral and the 15th century Altes Rathaus are among the best known historic buildings, while Michaelsberg Abbey stands above the town on one of its seven hills. The former abbey now houses the Franconian Brewery Museum.
Along the Regnitz, Klein Venedig, or Little Venice, is a picturesque row of former fishermen's houses dating from the 19th century. The riverside setting gives this part of Bamberg a quieter character, while Hain Park provides green space and a botanical garden. Beyond the town, the surrounding landscape includes seven hills, vineyards and hop fields.
Food and drink are an important part of Bamberg's identity. The town is particularly known for Rauchbier, or smoked beer, and has nine breweries and a brewpub. In August, the Sandkerwa fair brings a traditional celebration to the Old Town.
Bamberg is a rewarding stop for cruisers who enjoy historic streets, architecture and local food. Its compact center makes it easy to combine landmarks, riverside views and a taste of the town's distinctive brewing tradition during a port call.
