About Miltenberg
Miltenberg is a cruise port on the Main River in Bavaria’s Lower Franconia region, with a population of more than 9,000. River cruise ships call here on Main and Rhine itineraries, making the town a stop where a relatively small area packs in a great deal of history. The old town lies on the left bank of the Main, between the Spessart and Odenwald ranges.
The historic centre is squeezed into a narrow strip of land, little more than 150 metres wide. Much of the architecture dates from the 15th to 18th centuries, and the town is particularly known for its half timbered houses. Steep roofs, painted timber frames and cobbled streets give the old centre a distinctive character, with many buildings still closely packed along the old streets.
Miltenberg grew around a toll station established beside the river in the 13th century, while Mildenburg Castle provided protection from above. The castle itself dates from the 12th century and can be reached on foot for views over the town and river. Miltenberg also stood on an important trade route between Nuremberg and Frankfurt, helping it become a politically influential town during the Middle Ages.
Several historic sights are within the old town. Mildenburg Castle is the most prominent, while the Gothic Laurentiuskapelle offers another glimpse of the town’s medieval past. The Mainzer Tor and Würzburger Tor are surviving town gates that once formed part of Miltenberg’s defences. Another notable building is Zum Riesen, a historic hotel dating back to at least 1411 and regarded as one of the oldest continuously operating hotels in the world.
The town’s position on a bend in the navigable Main helps create much of its appeal from the river. The Odenwald forests rise close by, while hills confine the river and old town to a relatively narrow space. Arriving by river gives a clear sense of how geography shaped Miltenberg’s development.
