About Wertheim am Main
Wertheim am Main is a Main River cruise port in Germany’s Baden-Württemberg state, with a population of around 23,000. The town stands where the Tauber meets the Main and is best known for its medieval centre and the remains of Burg Wertheim above the town. River cruisers can walk from the ship into the historic centre, making it easy to explore the town on foot.
Wertheim’s history reaches back to between the 7th and 8th centuries, when the settlement developed around a castle built by the Counts of Wertheim on the left bank of the Main. Today, cobbled squares and half timbered buildings give the old town a strong medieval character. The compact centre is well suited to a leisurely walk, with local shops, bakeries and wine taverns adding to the atmosphere.
Burg Wertheim is the town’s most prominent landmark, standing above the old town with views across the Main and Tauber valleys. Other sights include Kittsteintor and its market square, which has been active since 1595, and the Blaues Haus, or Blue House. Bronnbach Abbey, founded in 1150, is another notable attraction in the surrounding area and adds to the region’s long history.
Festivals bring another side of Wertheim to life. The Altstadtfest takes place during the final three days of July, followed by a medieval festival at the castle. The Wertheimer Messe is another popular event, with an Oktoberfest style atmosphere bringing food, music and traditional crafts to the town.
The surrounding Main valley adds to the appeal, with the river winding past vineyards and small communities. For cruise passengers, Wertheim offers a straightforward chance to step ashore and explore a historic German town without needing to travel far from the river. Its combination of medieval architecture, castle ruins, local food and wine makes it a natural fit for a relaxed day of river cruising.
