MSC Meraviglia is operated by MSC Cruises and was built at the Chantiers de l'Atlantique shipyard in Saint Nazaire, France. She entered service in June 2017 and carries around 4,500 guests, placing her in the large ship category. She is the lead ship of the Meraviglia class, with MSC Bellissima joining the fleet in 2019. The ship was formally named by Italian actress Sophia Loren at a ceremony in Le Havre.
One of the defining spaces on Meraviglia is the large interior promenade, topped by an LED panel ceiling that gives the area a bright, contemporary feel. It is a natural place to meet friends, browse the shops or take in the activity around the ship. There is plenty for families to do as well, with a water park featuring slides and a rope course, plus a two level indoor amusement area.
Dining is a major part of the ship, with 12 dining venues offering a mix of choices. These include the Mediterranean Village specialty restaurant and the Yacht Club Fine Dining Restaurant. The buffet stays open for much of the day and offers international dishes, Mediterranean specialties, wellness options and regionally inspired cuisine. Around 75 percent of the staterooms have private step out balconies, while the spa provides a quieter place to spend time away from the livelier public areas.
Entertainment is another strong point. Two Cirque du Soleil productions were created specifically for Meraviglia and launched in June 2017, bringing acrobatic performances to the ship's purpose built theater.
Meraviglia also introduced digital features aimed at making everyday life on board easier. Near Field Communication technology allows guests to use smartphones, keycards or bracelets for payments, access and geolocation. Even the deck names have their own theme, drawing on famous architectural and historic sites from around the world.
With its broad choice of dining, entertainment and family activities, Meraviglia suits couples and families who enjoy a large contemporary ship with plenty happening around them, while still offering balconies, a spa and quieter spaces when it is time to slow down.
