About Ponta Delgada
Ponta Delgada is the executive capital of the Autonomous Region of the Azores in Portugal, located on São Miguel Island, the largest and most populous in the archipelago. Cruise ships dock at the port town on the southeastern coast. The port puts passengers right next to the city center, a short walk of about ten minutes from the ship. It is a typical port of call on European and transatlantic cruises.
Portuguese influence pervades Ponta Delgada from the stylish colonial architecture to the food and wine served in its restaurants. Built in the 18th century, the triple-arched black and white gateway called Portas de Cidade is what comes to mind when people think of Ponta Delgada. The Church of São Sebastião, built between 1531 and 1547, stands beside the Portas de Cidade and gleams with its white walls and ballast trim. The city centre is walkable and compact, lined with old-world cafés and boutique shops selling local crafts and goods.
São Miguel is nicknamed "The Green Island". The most dramatic attraction is Sete Cidades, a 15 square mile extinct volcanic crater in which two separate lakes have formed, one deep blue and the other emerald green. The Azores are home to hot springs, composed of 23 mineral springs spewing hot water in a sulfur-laden atmosphere. Thermal springs let visitors bathe in naturally heated waters.
The Azores are home to around 20 different species of dolphins and whales. Local seafood features prominently on menus, with Portuguese tapas-like petiscos given an Azorean twist. Grilled octopus and fried mackerel are mouthwatering staples. The only industrial tea plantations in Europe are located in the Azores. The island's lush landscape and water-based activities make Ponta Delgada a natural base for exploration of the larger archipelago.
