Belgrade Cruise Port

Belgrade is the capital of Serbia, set at the confluence of the Sava and Danube rivers where the Pannonian Plain meets the Balkans. The Port of Belgrade is a cargo and passenger port on the Danube in the centre of the city near Pančevo Bridge, while a passenger terminal is also managed on the nearby Sava River. River cruises generally visit Belgrade as a port of call on Danube itineraries rather than as a turnaround port.

Belgrade has a long and often turbulent history. The Vinča culture, one of prehistoric Europe's important cultures, developed in the wider Belgrade area during the 6th millennium BC. The town was later conquered by the Celts, who called it Singidûn, before the Slavs settled here in the 520s. Belgrade subsequently changed hands between different empires and became the capital of Serbian King Stephen Dragutin between 1282 and 1316.

The city was conquered by the Ottoman Empire in 1521 and later passed repeatedly between Ottoman and Habsburg control. Much of Belgrade was destroyed during the Austro-Ottoman wars, reflecting its strategic importance. In 1841, the city was again made the capital of Serbia. Belgrade is said to have been fought over in 115 wars and razed 44 times, while it served as the capital of Yugoslavia from 1918 until the country's final dissolution in 2006.

The Sava and Danube remain central to the character of the city today. Their confluence can be viewed from Belgrade Fortress and Kalemegdan, giving visitors a chance to see the setting that has helped shape the city's history. The fortress and surrounding park are among the city's best known landmarks.

Belgrade also has a lively cultural calendar, with annual theatre, film, summer and music festivals, alongside events such as the Book Fair and Beer Fest. For cruise passengers, the city offers a mixture of historic Ottoman and Austro-Hungarian influences and a contemporary cultural scene, all within a capital shaped by two major European rivers.
