About Osijek
Osijek is a river cruise port on the Drava River in eastern Croatia and the largest city in the Slavonia region. It stands on the southern bank of the river, around 25 kilometres upstream from its meeting with the Danube. For cruise passengers, the inland setting gives Osijek a distinctly riverside character, with the city, promenade and historic sights providing plenty to explore after coming ashore. It is used as a port of call on longer Danube voyages and can also be visited as a destination in its own right.
The Drava is central to Osijek's identity. The riverfront promenade is one of the city's pleasant places to walk, with open views and access to recreational areas. The setting also gives Osijek a quieter atmosphere than Croatia's better known coastal destinations. Away from the waterfront, the city is known for its Baroque architecture and generous open spaces.
Osijek's history has left a mixture of architectural influences. During the early 19th century, it was the largest city in Croatia and developed with cultural and architectural connections to other Central European cities, particularly Vienna and Buda. The main square, Trg Ante Starcevica, provides a starting point for exploring the city, while Tvrda, an 18th century Baroque citadel, is one of its most important historic areas.
The citadel is also close to the Drava and forms part of the city's distinctive character. Another notable landmark is a Neo Gothic church designed by German architect Franz Langenberg. Its tower rises to 90 metres, making it the second highest church tower in Croatia. A pedestrian suspension bridge crosses the Drava towards the Baranja region and provides another way to appreciate the river and its surroundings.
Osijek is a good choice for cruisers who prefer exploring a working inland city rather than spending their shore time among busy coastal resorts.
