Visegrad Cruise Port

Visegrád is a small castle town in Pest County, north of Budapest on the right bank of the Danube in the Danube Bend. It is a port of call on river cruises between Budapest and the upper Danube, with ships landing close to the town centre. The compact waterfront has cafés and shops within easy reach, while the surrounding hills make the town feel distinctly different from a larger city stop.

Visegrád's main attraction is its medieval citadel, set high above the Danube. The fortification began with the Upper Castle, built on a steep hill with a triangular layout and three corner towers. The remains of the Early Renaissance summer palace of King Matthias Corvinus are another important part of the site. Reaching the castle involves a steep walk from the town, with the climb taking at least an hour. It sits in a landscape of wooded hills and river scenery. The surrounding Danube Bend is popular with walkers, with trails crossing the hills and offering different levels of difficulty. For cruisers with limited time, a walk along the river provides an easier way to see the setting, while a longer visit allows time for the climb to the castle and further exploration.

The King Matthias Museum occupies the Solomon Tower and presents reconstructed Gothic fountains, Renaissance sculpture and other objects connected with the royal palace. The climb is worthwhile for the views across the Danube Bend as well as the historic buildings themselves.

Visegrád became the royal seat of Hungary under King Charles I in 1325. In 1335, Charles hosted a major meeting with John of Luxembourg, King of Bohemia, and Casimir III of Poland. The gathering helped establish peace between the three kingdoms and strengthened the relationship between Poland and Hungary. It gained a new political association centuries later. In 1991, Poland, Hungary and Czechoslovakia chose the town for a meeting that led to the Visegrád Group, later continuing with the Czech Republic and Slovakia.
