About Vienna
Vienna is Austria's capital and one of the Danube's best known river cruise ports. It often serves as a turnaround port, where river cruises begin or end, while other itineraries call here as part of a longer voyage. The city's location on the Danube puts it within easy reach of historic streets, grand buildings, museums and the everyday life of the Austrian capital.
The Danube runs through Vienna in several channels, including the Donaukanal, a regulated former arm of the river that follows the edge of the city center. The Port of Vienna has one of the Danube's larger passenger terminals and handles a steady flow of river cruise ships. For visitors, the waterfront provides a useful starting point for exploring the city beyond the immediate port area.
Vienna's relationship with the Danube has changed considerably over the centuries. Before the river was regulated, the area around Vienna included extensive wetlands, while major regulation works began in the nineteenth century. One of the most visible modern additions is the Donauinsel, a long artificial island between the Danube and the New Danube. Built between 1972 and 1988 primarily for flood protection, it has become a popular recreation area, with beaches, sports facilities, barbecue areas and restaurants.
Vienna's cultural reputation is woven into everyday life. Composers including Mozart, Beethoven and Schubert have strong connections with the city, while its coffeehouse tradition, opera houses, palaces and grand squares remain central to its character. A visit can easily combine major sights with quieter streets, local cafés and neighbourhoods away from the main attractions.
The Donaukanal provides another way to see Vienna. Boat trips run from Schwedenplatz in the city centre and travel along sections of the canal and Danube. The same area is also used by the Twin City Liner fast ferry, which connects Vienna with Bratislava.
