Krems an der Donau Cruise Port

Krems an der Donau is a historic city in Lower Austria, around 70 kilometres west of Vienna, where the Krems River meets the Danube at the eastern end of the Wachau Valley. It is a regular port of call on Danube river cruises, with most ships stopping for several hours to allow visitors to explore the town, while some itineraries include an overnight stay. Its combination of medieval streets, celebrated wine culture and riverside setting makes it one of the highlights of this stretch of the Danube.

Although home to just under 25,000 residents today, Krems was one of the region's most important towns during the 11th and 12th centuries, when it rivalled Vienna in size and influence. That rich history is still visible throughout the Old Town, where narrow streets are lined with well preserved medieval buildings, historic squares and centuries old churches. Landmarks include the Gozzoburg, one of Austria's finest preserved medieval town houses, the Pulverturm, several historic gateways and the parish church of St Veit, all reflecting the city's long and varied past.

Just outside the city, Göttweig Abbey stands high above the Danube with sweeping views across the surrounding countryside. Founded in the 11th century and rebuilt in the Baroque style, the abbey is known for its impressive frescoes, richly decorated interiors and one of Austria's grandest Baroque staircases. It remains one of the region's most visited historic sites and is a popular destination on shore excursions.

Krems sits at the heart of one of Austria's best known wine regions, with the vineyards of the Wachau climbing the hillsides along the river. Grüner Veltliner and Riesling are the area's signature wines, while local apricots are used to produce the region's well known Marillenschnaps. Visitors often enjoy tastings at local wine taverns or visit nearby wineries to learn more about the traditions that have shaped the valley for centuries.

The city also has a strong artistic and cultural heritage. It was the hometown of the Baroque painter Martin Johann Schmidt, better known as Kremserschmidt, and today museums, galleries and the university continue to bring creativity and learning to the city. With its historic streets, celebrated vineyards and welcoming atmosphere, Krems is a rewarding stop that captures the character of the Austrian Danube.
