MS Richard With

MS Richard With is one of Hurtigruten's six contemporary ships, built in 1993. She carries 700 passengers and is named after Captain Richard With, the founder of Hurtigruten. The ship was delivered exactly 100 years after Captain With completed his first Hurtigruten voyage in 1893, making her naming both a tribute to the company's heritage and a remarkable historical echo.

MS Richard With operates the Norwegian Coastal Voyages programme, a year-round cruise ferry service along the Norwegian coast calling at 34 different ports between Bergen and Kirkenes. The round-trip itinerary runs 11 days and also takes in the Lofoten Islands and Vesterålen Islands. Many travellers use her as a working ferry for transport and vehicles, though her appeal extends just as much to those after a slower, more intimate way to experience Norway's spectacular coastline.

Her interior reflects a distinctly Scandinavian approach, with beautifully decorated public spaces featuring artworks by Norwegian coastal artists and yellow as the dominant colour throughout. She has 219 staterooms across eight categories, including 20 suites, 178 outside cabins, and 21 inside cabins. Most outside staterooms measure 85 to 140 square feet (8 to 14 square metres) with large picture windows, and there are no balcony cabins on board.

The main restaurant offers a relaxed, informal atmosphere with menus built around fresh, locally sourced ingredients, while the aft-facing Torget Restaurant was renovated in 2018 and now features floor-to-ceiling windows. There's also a patisserie and ice cream bar serving cakes, pastries, and local ice creams in flavours such as stockfish, brown cheese, and cloudberry. Entertainment stays low-key, with most time spent socialising or enjoying the scenery, though the bar lounge occasionally hosts evening live music.

Onboard facilities include a small fitness room, two outdoor jacuzzis, and an infirmary. The 2018 refurbishment expanded the gym, added two aft-facing outdoor whirlpools, upgraded the sauna, and introduced two new lecture halls. MS Richard With now sails with hybrid battery systems, new engines, and advanced sewage treatment units that have together improved energy efficiency and cut NOx emissions by more than 80 percent.
