Roses Cruise Port

Roses is a seaside town on the Costa Brava in Catalonia, northeastern Spain, set at the northern end of the Gulf of Roses. Around 30 kilometres from the French border, it is best known as a fishing port and holiday destination, while smaller cruise ships may call here as a port of call and anchor offshore before transferring passengers ashore by tender.

The town has a long Mediterranean history. Greek settlers established a settlement here in the 5th century BC, and the Romans later developed it into a town. Centuries later, the Benedictine monastery of Santa Maria de Roses became an important local institution, while the strategic position of Roses led to the construction of several defensive works. The Ciutadella de Roses contains archaeological remains from different periods, including the ancient settlement and the monastery. Above the harbour, the Castell de la Trinitat was built in the 16th century during the reign of Emperor Charles V.

Roses is surrounded by the landscapes of the Costa Brava, with beaches, rocky coves and protected areas providing plenty of opportunities to explore outdoors. The GR 92 coastal footpath passes through the town, with walking routes extending towards Cadaqués and the surrounding countryside. Cala Montjoi and Almadrava beach are among the area's better known coastal spots, while kayaking, diving and other watersports make the sheltered waters popular with active visitors.

Food is closely tied to the town's fishing heritage. Suquet de peix, a traditional fish stew prepared with fresh fish and potatoes, is one of the local specialities and a good choice for visitors wanting to sample Catalan coastal cooking. Restaurants around the waterfront also make use of the region's seafood and Mediterranean ingredients.

Roses provides a quieter introduction to the Costa Brava, combining ancient history, a working harbour and attractive coastal scenery.
