Avignon is a Rhône River cruise port in the Provence region of southeastern France. It is one of the highlights of many Rhône itineraries and is usually visited as a port of call, with river cruise ships berthing close to the historic centre. From the waterfront, passengers can easily reach the city's medieval streets on foot, making Avignon one of the most rewarding destinations on a Rhône voyage.
Encircled by remarkably well preserved medieval walls, Avignon's historic centre has been recognised as a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Within the walls stand some of France's most important historic landmarks, including the magnificent Palais des Papes, Avignon Cathedral and the famous Pont d'Avignon. Walking along the ancient ramparts offers panoramic views across the Rhône and the surrounding countryside, while the narrow streets inside are filled with lively squares, boutiques and traditional cafés.
Avignon became one of Europe's most influential cities during the fourteenth century, when seven successive popes established their residence here. The vast Palais des Papes remains the city's defining landmark, dominating the skyline from its position above the river. Nearby, the Rocher des Doms gardens provide a peaceful place to enjoy views across the Rhône, while the surviving arches of the Pont d'Avignon recall the medieval bridge that once crossed the river and became famous around the world through song.
The Rhône has shaped Avignon for centuries, serving as an important trade route and helping the city flourish as a centre for merchants and travellers. Today, the riverside quays are lined with cafés and restaurants, while local markets offer Provençal produce, regional cheeses, olives and wines. The relaxed pace of life encourages visitors to wander through the historic streets and enjoy the atmosphere as much as the landmarks themselves.
Beyond the city, Avignon is an excellent base for exploring Provence. Popular excursions include the remarkably preserved Roman aqueduct of Pont du Gard, nearby vineyards and picturesque villages surrounded by rolling countryside. Whether you choose to discover the city's remarkable history or venture into the surrounding region, Avignon offers an unforgettable blend of heritage, culture and Provençal charm.
