About Keelung cruise port

LOCODE: TWKEL

Keelung is a major port city in northeastern Taiwan, nestled closely between the steep mountains and the edge of the East China Sea. The natural harbor sits directly adjacent to the bustling downtown area, allowing arriving travelers to step off the ship and immediately explore local sights or easily access nearby Taipei, which lies just twenty-five to thirty minutes away by car or forty-five minutes by train.

Often nicknamed the Rainy Port due to its frequent rainfall and rich maritime identity, Keelung stands proudly as Taiwan's second-largest seaport. The modern port officially opened in 1886, evolving over the decades from a regional trading post into a major international shipping hub. The area's storied history features Spanish occupation at Fort San Salvador in 1626, strategic conflicts during the nineteenth century, Japanese administration beginning in 1895, and rapid post-war economic expansion that cemented its status as a global trade center.

In recent years, the port has emerged as a premier hub for major international cruise lines, earning widespread recognition as a top regional home port. Modern terminal infrastructure accommodates large passenger vessels efficiently, providing a seamless transition for travelers embarking on or returning from extended Asian voyages.

Ashore, the compact downtown keeps key attractions within easy walking distance of the waterfront. The most famous local highlight is the bustling Miaokou Night Market, centered around the traditional Dianji Temple with its intricate wood carvings and mythological statues. Overlooking the bay, a towering statue of the Goddess of Mercy serves as a welcoming landmark for incoming ships, while nature lovers can venture slightly inland to explore the forested trails and scenic waters of Lovers Lake.
