About Bay of Islands
The Bay of Islands sits on the east coast of the Far North District of New Zealand's North Island. Because the port features no dedicated docks for passenger ships, cruise vessels must anchor out in the bay while passengers are offloaded via tender boats. Most cruise lines utilize Paihia as the main arrival point, serving as the primary tourist town where a convenient local ferry service runs back and forth to historic Russell if you want to explore both settlements.
The stunning bay encompasses 144 islands, with Urupukapuka standing out as the largest. Benefiting from a noticeable subtropical influence, the local region enjoys the mildest weather of any station in New Zealand, alongside exceptionally clear skies that rank among the finest globally.
As the very first area in New Zealand to be settled by Europeans, the region holds deep historical significance. Russell, formerly known as Kororáreka, was established as the first permanent European settlement following the arrival of whalers in the late eighteenth century and missionaries in 1814. Furthermore, the historic Treaty of Waitangi, which ushered in a new era for the nation as a bi-cultural society, was signed right here in the bay. In the 1930s, American author Zane Grey famously publicized the area's incredible waters, cementing its international reputation for premier big-game fishing.
Today, the destination remains a haven for outdoor water recreation, including fishing, sailing, and scuba diving. A major highlight is the famous Hole in the Rock, a massive natural tunnel carved by the ocean into Motukokako Island that stands sixteen meters high and allows medium-sized ships to pass right through. Ashore, visitors can discover the Kerikeri Mission House, which is the oldest wooden structure still standing in the country, alongside the historic Stone Store with construction dating back to 1832.
