Sylvia Earle is an ice-strengthened expedition vessel that entered service in November 2022, operated by Aurora Expeditions, an Australian company specialising in Arctic and Antarctic cruises. She carries around 120 passengers in 71 staterooms, a small expedition ship built for the demands of polar exploration, though mid-sized by capacity given her purpose-built focus on remote regions rather than mainstream cruising.
She's named after marine biologist and oceanographer Sylvia Earle, the first female Chief Scientist of the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration. Each of her six passenger decks carries the name of a renowned female conservationist, reflecting Aurora's commitment to recognising pioneers in ocean protection and environmental work, and the ship was fittingly christened in Antarctica by Dr Earle herself.
Onboard, Sylvia Earle offers three restaurants, open deck dining, a piano bar, a two-deck observation lounge, a show lounge, wellness facilities with a gym and spa, a library, a pool, and two jacuzzis. A distinctive two-level, glass-enclosed bar lounge sits at the bow, ideal for watching icebergs and wildlife pass close by. All staterooms are outside cabins, with most featuring a private balcony accessible via glass doors.
She holds the highest ice classification available to a passenger vessel, with icebreaking capacity of 1 metre, allowing passage through seriously frozen waters. A fleet of Zodiac boats supports excursions and landings, alongside a stern marina for sea kayaking, snorkeling, and scuba diving, while her inverted bow design smooths crossings in rough seas and reduces fuel consumption.
The ship is designed for an informal atmosphere, with expedition teams guiding small groups through Zodiac cruises, walks, sea kayaking, scuba diving, snorkeling, and wildlife watching.
Sylvia Earle suits travellers after polar adventure with an emphasis on conservation and learning, who value small ship intimacy and direct access to remote landscapes.
