Sea Cloud 2 is a large barque built as a cruise ship and operated by Sea Cloud Cruises of Hamburg, Germany. She was delivered on 29 December 2000 and completed her final fitting out on 22 January 2001. She accommodates a maximum of 96 passengers, making her a small, intimate vessel. Unlike her sister ship Sea Cloud, which dates to 1931, Sea Cloud 2 is a newbuild, with her construction awarded to the Spanish shipbuilder Astilleros Gondán.
Her most striking feature is her square-rigged sailing rig. Measuring just over 105 metres long, she carries 47 staterooms, all outside-facing, with a main mast reaching 57 metres above deck and 23 sails covering a total area of 3,000 square metres. All sails are set by hand by crew who work suspended high above the deck, rather than relying on computer control, making her a working sail in the truest sense, handled traditionally as on classic sail training ships.
Cabins run from compact interior berths to generously sized owner suites. There are 27 outside cabins with portholes, ranging from 12 to 20 square metres, each equipped with two beds, television, safe, shower and a marble vanity with gold-plated taps. The two owner suites measure 27 square metres and feature four-poster beds along with larger bathrooms that include both a tub and a separate shower. The interior is air-conditioned, with cabin temperatures controlled individually.
The Berlitz Complete Guide to Cruising & Cruise Ships awarded her a five-star rating. Sea Cloud 2 is often privately chartered alongside regular revenue voyages, with groups booking the ship for religious conventions, business meetings, alumni gatherings and private celebrations.
Sea Cloud 2 suits sailors and cultured travelers who want the elegance of a proper tall ship with cabin comfort and personalized service, where the sailing itself is as much part of the holiday as the ports visited.
