Gozo sits in the Eastern Mediterranean Sea as the second-largest island of the Maltese archipelago, forming an integral part of the Republic of Malta. Cruise ships dock at Mġarr Harbour, which is located directly on the island's southeastern coast. Offering a much more rural and laid-back atmosphere than the main island of Malta, Gozo features a population of around 35,000 residents and a scenic landscape defined by rolling hills, terraced fields, and quiet rural villages. For visiting cruise passengers, this peaceful port of call opens onto timeless countryside, traditional limestone architecture, and deep historical roots.
The island boasts extraordinary historical landmarks, most notably the UNESCO-listed Ġgantija temples, which rank among the oldest free-standing stone structures in the entire world. Dominating the center of the island is the Cittadella, a historic medieval citadel perched above Victoria that has been fortified and continuously inhabited since the Bronze Age. According to classical mythology, Gozo is also famously identified with Ogygia, the mythical island home of the nymph Calypso as described in Homer's ancient epic poetry.
Dramatic coastal scenery attracts outdoor enthusiasts, hikers, and water sports lovers from across Europe to explore its shores. Popular coastal spots include the vibrant seaside fishing villages and swimming areas of Xlendi Bay and Marsalforn, alongside legendary geologic formations like the collapsed remnants of the Azure Window. Crystal-clear waters and thriving marine life make Gozo one of the premier Mediterranean scuba diving destinations, offering exceptional underwater caverns, vibrant reefs, and fascinating shipwrecks to explore.
Local village cafes and rustic family-run trattorias serve traditional Gozitan ftira bread, fresh Mediterranean sea bass, sweet honey rings, and savory local goat cheese.
History buffs, nature lovers, and Mediterranean cruisers will find this tranquil Maltese island captivating for its prehistoric temples, rugged coastline, and rural charm. Been on a cruise to Gozo? Log this cruise on The Cruise Globe to see the precise route.
