MS Artania is a mid-sized cruise ship currently operated by the German travel company Phoenix Reisen, accommodating approximately twelve hundred passengers across nine guest decks. Originally constructed in Helsinki in nineteen eighty-four, the liner entered commercial service as Royal Princess following a formal christening ceremony by Diana, Princess of Wales.
The vessel holds an influential position in passenger ship architecture as the first ocean cruise ship built without interior staterooms. Her design placed all public spaces across lower decks while positioning staterooms above, introducing standard balcony cabins to the commercial cruise industry.
The ship transitioned to P and O Cruises in two thousand five under the name Artemis, operating for six years before joining the Phoenix Reisen fleet in April twenty eleven. Following her acquisition by the German operator, the vessel underwent four major technical refurbishments at the Lloyd Werft shipyard in Bremerhaven.
Engineering upgrades included installing four new Wärtsilä engines alongside the addition of ninety-six new private balconies for existing staterooms. Modernization efforts also added updated culinary venues and refurbished passenger accommodations while preserving the classic profile of the liner.
Operating as an adults-only vessel, the cruise ship offers a quiet and relaxed onboard atmosphere that sets her apart from larger mega-ships. German serves as the sole official language on board, attracting a guest demographic primarily composed of travelers from Germany, Austria, Switzerland, and Belgium.
Onboard amenities encompass three distinct main dining venues, seven bars and lounges, a lecture theater, an onboard cinema, and two outdoor swimming pools. Seasonal itineraries feature departures from Kiel and Bremerhaven toward the Norwegian Fjords, Iceland, Greenland, and the Baltic Sea alongside long-distance global voyages.
The carefully maintained vessel caters to discerning travelers who appreciate an unhurried onboard pace and classic design principles. Passengers can review their completed sailing itineraries across northern waters and record their personal sea travel history.
