About St Georges Grenada
St. George's is the capital of Grenada, set on a horseshoe-shaped harbour surrounded by hillsides formed by an old volcanic crater. Ships call here mainly as a port of call rather than a turnaround port, stepping into one of the Caribbean's most recognised anchorages. Larger cruise ships dock at Melville Street Cruise Terminal, with passengers exiting through Esplanade Shopping Mall directly into downtown.
The city was founded by the French in 1650 and they constructed a wooden fortification in 1666 on a promontory overlooking the harbour, later called Fort Royale. When the island passed to Britain in 1763, the settlement was renamed Saint George's Town after the patron saint of England, and the fort became Fort George. Colourful colonial architecture dots the skyline today, and the area shows both French and British influence, visible in historic Fort George and Fort Frederick.
What sets St. George's apart is the smell. Grenada's main exports are nutmeg, mace, and cocoa, with nutmeg being the key crop followed by spices such as cloves, vanilla, cinnamon and ginger. Grenada is known as the Island of Spice due to its production of nutmeg and mace. The Sendall Tunnel, built over 125 years ago, connects downtown to the Carenage waterfront promenade, where the air fills with those signature aromas and the waterfront bristles with activity.
The interior of the island rewards exploration. Grand Etang National Park, about an hour inland, offers sea turtle watching at Levera National Park and hiking in the lush interior, while Grand Etang Lake is a 30-acre crater lake filled with natural cobalt blue water. Grand Anse Beach, two miles long, is a popular option for relaxing, with watersport activities and shaded areas, and sits just south of the port.
St. George's has a humid tropical marine climate with a wet season from June to November and a dry season from December to May, with occasional hurricanes. Carnival takes place the second week in August, celebrating the emancipation of slaves, with calypso steel bands parading through the streets on Tuesday.
