Savusavu sits on the south coast of Vanua Levu Island, Fiji's second-largest island. Operating primarily as a scenic South Pacific port of call on regional island-hopping itineraries, cruise ships dock or anchor near the town center, placing visitors within a short walk of local artisan shops and fresh produce markets. Known locally as the hidden paradise of Fiji, the coastal town has a population of around 3,400 residents. The surrounding bay features calm, sheltered waters framed by green coastal hills and traditional South Pacific landscapes.
The town is famous for its natural geothermal activity, centered around the Nakama hot springs situated opposite the Hot Springs Hotel. In the late 19th century, these thermal vents briefly transformed into towering geysers reaching up to 18 meters in height. Today, the refurbished Nakama site features stone steps and landscaping where local residents still traditionally cook food using the natural steam. Nearby rainforest waterfalls, lush coconut palm plantations, and pristine coral reefs offer excellent opportunities for swimming, nature walks, and snorkeling among vibrant tropical marine life.
Savusavu grew historically as a key trading post for sandalwood, beche-de-mer, and copra, housing a major regional copra mill. Along the harbor, the historic 19th-century Copra Shed Marina has been restored to house local shops, waterfront dining, and the Savusavu Yacht Club. Cultural landmarks near town include the Savarekareka Mission, an iconic stone chapel constructed around 1870 by the first Roman Catholic mission on the island. Today, eco-tourism, world-class scuba diving, and luxury resorts like the Jean-Michel Cousteau Resort drive the local economy.
Waterfront cafes, casual eateries, and local markets near the marina offer visiting travelers pleasant spots to enjoy fresh tropical fruits, cold drinks, and authentic Fijian hospitality.
Savusavu appeals to nature lovers, scuba divers, and South Pacific cruise travelers seeking geothermal wonders, historic copra trading heritage, and tranquil tropical bays. Record your cruise that anchored at Savusavu to your account on The Cruise Globe.
