About Saunders Island
Saunders Island is the fourth-largest island in the Falkland Islands archipelago, situated off the northwestern coast of West Falkland. Operating as a remote Sub-Antarctic port of call, access is strictly via expedition cruise vessels during the Southern Hemisphere summer season. Small expedition ships anchor offshore while passengers travel to land via Zodiac boats onto sandy beaches or grassy banks. Featuring dramatic coastal cliffs, rolling hills, and sheltered bays, the island's main settlement sits along the eastern shore, complete with a small airstrip supporting local island transport.
The island holds immense historical significance, serving as the site of the first British settlement in 1765 at Port Egmont. During the Falkland Crisis of 1770, five Spanish frigates entered the harbor, forcing a brief British surrender before diplomatic agreements restored British control in 1771. When British forces withdrew in 1776 due to economic pressures, they erected a famous lead plaque asserting British sovereignty over the archipelago. Today, history enthusiasts visiting the island can view this historic memorial alongside remnants of early colonial fortifications and vintage farmsteads.
Designated as an Important Bird Area by BirdLife International, the island shelters massive wildlife colonies along its coastline. The unique narrow neck of land known as The Neck features five different penguin species, including breeding colonies of King, Gentoo, and Southern Rockhopper penguins alongside Magellanic and Macaroni penguins. Substantial nesting colonies of Black-browed albatrosses blanket the seaside cliffs, while Elephant Point supports a resident colony of Southern elephant seals. Active sheep farming continues across the island alongside eco-tourism guesthouses like the Rookery Inn.
