About New Island
New Island is one of the Falkland Islands, positioned north of Beaver Island, roughly 238 kilometers (148 miles) west of Stanley. Operating strictly as a remote expedition port of call, the narrow island extends 13 kilometers in length with high cliffs along its northern and western coasts, contrasted by lower-lying eastern shores featuring sandy bays and rocky inlets. Cruise ships anchor offshore in sheltered waters, using rubber zodiac boats or tender craft to transport passengers directly to land.
The island retains a rich maritime history centered around early South Atlantic whaling, sealing, and exploration. New Island was among the earliest sites in the Falklands to be settled, serving as an operational base for American whalers from Nantucket as early as the 1770s. In 1813, Captain Charles H. Barnard was marooned on the island with his crew, surviving for two years and constructing a stone refuge. Restored in 2006, the Barnard Building stands as the oldest remaining structure in the Falkland Islands, operating alongside a museum and the visible wreck of the Protector III, a former Royal Navy minesweeper turned sealing vessel beached in 1969.
Recognized as an Important Bird Area by BirdLife International, the island offers an extraordinary sanctuary for native wildlife amidst a treeless landscape dominated by coastal grasses. Large breeding colonies of gentoo penguins and southern rockhopper penguins nest along the terrain, while black-browed albatrosses nest nearby. Coastal waters and beaches host South American fur seals, southern sea lions, and Peale's dolphins. Since 2020, the island has been managed for environmental conservation and eco-tourism by Falklands Conservation.
