About Puerto Madryn cruise port

LOCODE: ARPMY

Puerto Madryn sits on the sheltered shores of Golfo Nuevo in the Chubut province of Argentine Patagonia, serving as a premier maritime gateway for international travelers exploring the dramatic southern coastline. Operating primarily as an essential port of call rather than a turnaround destination, the city acts as a vital stepping stone for cruise passengers heading toward some of the world's most remarkable marine wildlife reserves.

The local maritime infrastructure features two primary piers, most notably the Comandante Luis Piedra Buena Pier, which stands proudly as Argentina's first pier built exclusively for passenger cruise ships. Stretching nearly nine hundred fifty meters long and located just two hundred meters from the lively downtown area, it allows disembarking visitors to step right off the vessel and immediately access coastal promenades, shops, and seafood restaurants.

The city carries a living memory of its unique Welsh heritage, having been founded on July 28, 1865, when one hundred fifty Welsh immigrants arrived aboard the clipper Mimosa. Named in honor of Sir Love Jones-Parry, whose Welsh estate was called Madryn, the community preserves its distinct British roots through local bakeries and tearooms that still serve traditional afternoon tea alongside warm Patagonian hospitality.

Beyond the urban center lies an untamed wilderness defined by the UNESCO-listed Península Valdés, which shelters the protected waters of Golfo Nuevo and serves as a vital global breeding ground for endangered southern right whales from May through December.

The region is equally famous for resident orcas that employ a unique intentional beaching technique to hunt sea lion and elephant seal pups, alongside a rich coastal ecosystem supporting over one hundred eighty bird species.

A relaxed coastal ambiance defines the downtown area, where Avenida Roca runs alongside the beach to offer sweeping ocean vistas.
