About Caleta Tortel cruise port

Caleta Tortel is a coastal village in Chile, situated between the mouth of the Baker River, the country's largest river, and a small embayment of the Baker Channel. It lies between the Northern and Southern Patagonian Ice Fields in the Aysén Region, and serves as a port of call visited mainly by luxury expedition cruise lines exploring Chilean Patagonia. The surrounding geography is rugged, shaped by a scatter of islands, fjords, channels and estuaries, and the village itself remains one of the most remote settlements accessible by sea in the region.

What sets Caleta Tortel apart is its utterly distinctive appearance. Founded in 1955 to exploit the Guaytecas cypress wood abundant in the area, the village consists mainly of stilt houses in the Chilotan architectural style, strung along the coast for several kilometres. There are no conventional streets. Instead, wooden walkways built from Guaytecas cypress wind through the settlement, connecting homes and gathering spots and giving it a look and culture found nowhere else in Chile. For most of its history the village had only air and boat access, until a road was built in 2003 connecting it to the Carretera Austral and opening it up to overland travel for the first time.

The landscape around the port draws visitors ashore. Boat tours run from the village to Jorge Montt Glacier and other nearby sights, and Caleta Tortel serves as one of the gateways to Bernardo O'Higgins National Park, home to vast stretches of ice field and wilderness. True to its location in the far south of Patagonia, the climate here is cool and often wet, with weather that can shift quickly through the day.
