About Progreso
Progreso sits on Mexico's Gulf coast on the Yucatán Peninsula, 43 kilometres northwest of the state capital Mérida. It serves as one of the region's newest cruise ports with the capacity to handle the world's largest passenger vessels, functioning primarily as a beach resort destination while supporting container shipping, cruise tourism, and local fishing industries.
The port features the world's longest pier at 8,019 metres, a massive structure verified by the Guinness Book of World Records. Because the coastal seabed slopes extremely gently and the water near the shore is shallow, this engineering feat was necessary to allow large ships to dock. Cruise passengers disembark at the Terminal Remota, which opened in 1989 and juts 6.5 kilometres into the gulf, where they find a duty-free shopping complex, tourist information, and a bar with free WiFi before taking free 15-minute shuttle buses into downtown Progreso.
Founded in 1856 to serve as Mérida's harbor, the town was historically used for exporting sisal fiber from local plantations. Despite its scenic location along the water, Progreso features a distinct semi-arid climate.
The laid-back town stretches along a palm-shaded beach and acts as the gateway to some of the region's most famous Mayan sites, including Chichen Itza and Uxmal, as well as the elegant old city of Mérida. Daily life centers around the bustling Malecón waterfront, where visitors discover food stalls, beachfront cafés, souvenir shops, and nearby handicrafts markets. The surrounding landscape also hides crystal-clear natural cenotes fed by underground rivers, along with the striking Laguna Rosada where pink-red algae colors the water and attracts flocks of gathering flamingos.
